Tallahassee Man Enters Guilty Plea in Federal Interstate Stalking Case

Tallahassee, Florida – Matthew D. Weger, 33, residing in Tallahassee, Florida, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of interstate stalking, according to an announcement by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin emphasized the seriousness of the prosecution, stating, “This successful prosecution ensures this defendant will be held accountable for the numerous criminal threats he made toward the victim over the course of several months. My office will not hesitate to aggressively prosecute anyone whose behavior exceeds the limits of constitutionally protected speech and crosses the line into criminal threats.”

Court documents reveal that law enforcement was alerted by a tip from an individual concerned about threatening statements made by Weger against law enforcement officers. Upon investigation, authorities learned that Weger had been stalking this individual from at least December 14, 2023, through June 25, 2024.

During this period, Weger left multiple threatening messages and voicemails, including explicit threats to kill. Despite the individual blocking Weger’s phone number, he continued to leave voicemails. Additionally, Weger sent threatening messages through Cash App, accompanying online payments made in approximately $1.00 increments totaling around $2,000. Each payment was paired with a threatening note.

Sentencing for Weger is scheduled for February 5, 2027, at 1:00 p.m. before United States District Judge T. Kent Wetherell, II, in Tallahassee, Florida.

This prosecution was the result of a joint investigation involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Tallahassee Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Welch is handling the case.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
