Meta Platforms Faces Landmark Trial in New Mexico Over Alleged Harm to Children on Social Media

According to court filings, the case alleges that Meta failed to adequately warn users and parents about the risks associated with prolonged social media use. It further claims that the company prioritized profit and user growth over safety, particularly for younger audiences who may be more vulnerable to online influences. Internal documents, some of which have been cited in earlier investigations, are expected to play a key role in the trial.

Legal experts say this case stands out because it directly targets the design and operational choices of a major tech platform, rather than focusing solely on individual instances of harm. If the court finds Meta liable, it could open the door for similar lawsuits across multiple jurisdictions, significantly increasing regulatory pressure on the tech industry.

Meta, however, has strongly denied the allegations. The company maintains that it has invested heavily in safety features, parental controls, and tools designed to protect young users. In its defense, Meta argues that it provides resources to help families manage online experiences and that responsibility should be shared among users, parents, and policymakers.

The trial also reflects a broader shift in public and political attitudes toward social media companies. In recent years, lawmakers, regulators, and advocacy groups have increasingly raised concerns about the psychological and social effects of digital platforms on children. This case is part of a growing wave of litigation aimed at holding tech giants accountable for those impacts.

Governments around the world are already considering stricter regulations, including age verification systems, limits on targeted advertising to children, and greater transparency around algorithmic decision-making.
