Italian Voters Reject Judicial Reform in Setback for Meloni

By Editorial Team

Italian voters dealt a blow to conservative Premier Giorgia Meloni by rejecting a judicial reform she supported, marking a significant setback for the right-wing government ahead of national elections next year.

In a video posted on Instagram, Meloni acknowledged the decision, stating, “Italian citizens have decided and we respect their decision as always.” Despite the defeat, she affirmed her commitment to completing her mandate until 2027, emphasizing responsibility and respect for the country and its people.

The “No” camp secured nearly 54% of the vote, surpassing the government-backed “Yes” campaign, which garnered around 46%, according to final results from the Interior Ministry. The unexpectedly high turnout of almost 59% over the two-day ballot reflected the polarizing nature of the campaign.

The proposed judicial reform aimed to streamline Italy’s judicial system, criticized for its sluggishness, bureaucracy, and susceptibility to political interference. However, opponents raised concerns that the reform could concentrate excessive power in the executive branch, potentially undermining judicial independence and institutional checks and balances.

The defeat not only questions the stability and unity of Meloni’s governing coalition but also impacts Italy’s international standing. Meloni’s alignment with U.S. President Donald Trump and his controversial policies, including the war on Iran, faces heightened scrutiny following the referendum setback.

Analysts suggest that the referendum outcome bolsters the center-left opposition, highlighting public dissatisfaction with the government’s economic performance and foreign policy decisions. The opposition, led by figures like Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party, aims to present a credible alternative ahead of the upcoming elections.

The defeat in the referendum challenges Meloni’s leadership and raises uncertainties about the future political landscape in Italy. It underscores the need for the government to address public concerns and regain trust as the country approaches a critical juncture in its political journey.
