Governor Sherrill Signs Legislation Allowing Expansion of Early Voting for May Municipal Elections

In a significant move to enhance voter accessibility and ensure the integrity of elections, Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed a bill into law that permits the extension of the early voting period for regular municipal elections in May.

The bill, A4745/S420, sponsored by Wainstein, Rodriguez, McCoy, Stack, and Mukherji, allows municipalities to expand early voting, providing more opportunities for New Jerseyans to participate in the electoral process at the local level.

Governor Sherrill emphasized the importance of safeguarding elections amid attempts to undermine them, stating, “This bill will allow municipalities to expand early voting and ensure the people of our state have their voices heard at the local level, where these decisions will shape our neighborhoods, our schools, and our daily lives.”

Senator Brian Stack expressed his support for the legislation, highlighting the significance of enhancing voter accessibility. He stated, “This bill offers additional days to vote, and I’m hopeful that even more residents will participate in our sacred election process.”

Assemblyman Larry Wainstein underscored the necessity of early voting, emphasizing that it is crucial for individuals who do not work traditional schedules. He commended Governor Sherrill for prioritizing the interests of the people and signing the bill into law.

The new law authorizes municipalities holding nonpartisan elections in May to commence early voting eight days before Election Day, extending the early voting window by four days. Early voting will conclude two days before the election, providing voters with a total of seven days to cast their ballots early.

This extension aims to offer voters more flexibility and opportunities to participate in nonpartisan municipal elections, aligning the early voting period for these elections more closely with that of state and federal elections.

The move follows the Trump Administration’s recent executive order on mail-in ballots, which has raised concerns about voter suppression and election integrity.
