A California federal judge has ordered patent firm Ramey LLP and its founder to pay Netflix $95,000 in attorney fees for violating a court protective order by sharing confidential documents with a third-party litigation funder.
The ruling, issued by U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California Judge Jon S. Tigar, came after Perkins Coie, representing Netflix, filed a motion seeking sanctions against Ramey LLP for breaching the court’s protective order.
The court found that Ramey LLP had shared confidential information, including documents related to Netflix, with a third-party litigation funder without authorization, which was a direct violation of the court’s protective order.
As a result, the court ordered Ramey LLP and its founder to pay $95,000 in attorney fees to Netflix as a sanction for the unauthorized disclosure of confidential information.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to court orders and protecting the confidentiality of sensitive information in legal proceedings.
