Before joining HCA, Shin held several high-profile positions in the tech sector. He was Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Moloco, a venture-backed AI/ML AdTech unicorn, and served as Chief Counsel of Software, Cloud, and AI, as well as Chief Privacy Officer at Varian—a medical device and oncology software firm later acquired by Siemens in 2021. His legal journey began at global law firms DLA Piper and Mayer Brown, where he practiced M&A, corporate, and securities law.
“David has deep experience in guiding AI and technology strategy for some of America’s largest and most innovative corporations,” said Mark Williams, VAILL Founding Co‑Director and Professor of the Practice of Law at Vanderbilt Law. Williams emphasized that Shin’s arrival will enrich VAILL’s educational mission, particularly as AI continues to reshape legal education and professional practice.
Expanding VAILL’s Impact in AI Governance
Founded by Williams and Cat Moon, VAILL focuses on preparing legal and compliance professionals to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. With Shin’s appointment, VAILL expects to deepen its programming through enhanced curriculum development, student engagement, and public events.
“Alongside Mark and Cat Moon, the goal is to equip the next generation of legal and compliance professionals with the skills to navigate this evolving AI risk landscape,” Shin remarked . He added he looks forward to contributing through panel discussions, classroom sessions, and direct mentoring of Vanderbilt Law students.
VAILL is known for its multi-disciplinary approach—blending legal, technological, and ethical perspectives—on contemporary challenges such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, and regulatory compliance. Recognizing the increasing impact of AI across sectors like healthcare, finance, and public policy, the lab has prioritized real-world applications of its research and training efforts.
Bringing Real‑World Insights to Campus
Students and faculty alike will benefit from Shin’s hands-on experience in implementing AI strategies at scale. At HCA, he has overseen initiatives ranging from predictive analytics in patient monitoring to process automation in hospital administration. His corporate lens will ground academic theory in practical, enterprise-level problem-solving.
