East Texas Lawmaker Assures Legality and Texas Values in New Congressional Maps

By Editorial Team

An East Texas lawmaker, State Rep. Cole Hefner, R-Mount Pleasant, is part of the House Select Committee on Redistricting, tasked with redrawing Texas’ 38 congressional districts during a special legislative session in Austin. Hefner stated that the committee will address concerns raised by the Department of Justice regarding the constitutionality of the current congressional maps.

President Donald Trump has urged Texas lawmakers to redraw the districts to secure a Republican majority in the U.S. House for the 2026 midterm elections. The Department of Justice notified Texas officials that four districts were unconstitutionally drawn based on racial factors, prompting the need for redistricting mid-decade, an uncommon occurrence.

Hefner emphasized that the redistricting process is crucial to the Trump administration and that the committee will ensure the new maps align with Texas values while staying within legal boundaries. The current maps have faced legal challenges, with Texas officials now acknowledging the racial factors in their design.

Democrats in Texas have criticized the redistricting as a power grab by Republicans. Hefner acknowledged that redistricting is a politically charged process influenced by the party in power but reiterated the committee’s commitment to creating maps that reflect Texas values and comply with the law.

Each congressional district in Texas is expected to represent approximately 766,000 residents. Democrats in the Legislature have threatened various tactics to impede the redistricting process, including breaking quorum. However, the House has penalties in place for members who attempt to disrupt the proceedings.

State Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, a member of the Senate redistricting committee, emphasized the importance of ensuring that congressional representatives align with Texas values and the interests of its residents.

As the redistricting process unfolds, the focus remains on creating fair and legal congressional maps that accurately represent the diverse population of Texas while upholding the state’s core values.
