Can the President Cancel Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday?
By Editorial Team
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday. However, questions have arisen about whether a future president, such as Donald Trump, could cancel Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
According to legal experts, the president does not have the authority to cancel a federal holiday unilaterally. Once a holiday is established by law, it would require an act of Congress to repeal it. Therefore, President Trump, or any future president, would not be able to cancel Juneteenth as a federal holiday on their own.
While the president cannot cancel Juneteenth as a federal holiday, individual states have the authority to determine which holidays they observe. Some states may choose not to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday, but they cannot override the federal designation of Juneteenth as a holiday.
Juneteenth holds significant historical and cultural importance in the United States, marking the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom in 1865. The holiday has gained increased recognition and observance in recent years, with many companies and organizations also recognizing it as a day of reflection and celebration.
As it stands, Juneteenth remains a federal holiday, and any changes to its status would require legislative action by Congress. While the president cannot unilaterally cancel Juneteenth, the holiday’s significance continues to be recognized and celebrated across the country.
