Brown University Launches Legal Aid and Emergency Fund for International Community

The university is also establishing an emergency financial assistance fund specifically for international community members. This fund is designed to provide short-term relief to individuals facing sudden or unexpected financial hardships. University administrators explained that international students and employees often face additional barriers to accessing emergency aid, such as restrictions on employment or limitations on family support from abroad. The new fund seeks to address these gaps by providing timely and confidential financial assistance in critical moments of need.

University officials noted that the emergency assistance could be used for a variety of urgent needs, including medical emergencies, housing insecurity, travel disruptions, or unforeseen legal expenses. A streamlined application process will ensure quick responses to requests while maintaining the privacy and dignity of applicants. The fund will be administered by a dedicated team within the Office of Campus Life, working closely with OISSS and other partners to assess and support applicants in a holistic and compassionate manner.

Brown’s provost expressed pride in the initiative, stating that the university recognizes the immense contributions that international students and scholars bring to the academic and cultural life of the campus. He reaffirmed the institution’s responsibility to ensure that these community members are not left vulnerable due to circumstances beyond their control. By investing in legal and financial resources tailored specifically to international needs, Brown aims to foster an environment where all individuals can pursue their academic and professional goals without fear of legal uncertainty or financial crisis.

The announcement has been met with appreciation from students and faculty, many of whom have advocated for greater institutional support in recent years. International student organizations and advocacy groups have long highlighted the unique vulnerabilities faced by non-U.S. nationals, particularly during periods of political upheaval, global pandemics, and shifting immigration enforcement policies.
